Psalms 45:16

Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth.

Psalm 45:16 belongs to a prophetic song about Christ and the church, foretelling Christ Himself and His wonderful work and triumph. It stands with Psalms 42-45 as songs of joy and cheer, bringing help and encouragement after strong, faithful denunciations by the prophets. It promises that children shall stand in the place of the fathers and be made princes and leaders in all the earth and throughout the earth.

It belongs to a description of the millennial era and is a promise of Christ's personal, pre-millennial return. In that picture He rides forth triumphantly with peoples falling under Him, fairer than the children of men, and reigns on His own everlasting throne for ever and ever. He celebrates His marriage to the church, with the queen at His right hand as the Bride in a marriage festival, while Jehovah of hosts is present with His people, stilling the nations, exalted among the heathen in the earth, and making wars cease unto the end of the earth.

It shows that the Messiah was to be a righteous King and emphatically the Prince of peace. This was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who was eminently distinguished as a righteous person and the great peacemaker both on earth and in heaven. In this prophetic context the psalm is connected with Christ's gospel going out to win the world.

Its prediction that children will succeed their fathers as leaders is fulfilled when parents and Sunday-school workers teach and train children. By that faithful teaching children become invested in the work and future of the church.
