Jerusalem Secure While Mountains Fall Into the Seaby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 46:3

Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

The roaring waters and shaking mountains picture overwhelming turmoil and upheaval that cannot undo God's help for those who rely on Him. It belongs to a hymn celebrating God as His people's refuge and strength in trouble, sung after Judah trusted God and He delivered them from their enemies. It is the triumphant song of confidence sung by the faithful at their sudden final deliverance, declaring that God is their refuge and near help in trouble so they need not fear amid terror and convulsed nature. Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus have a defense without fear amid end-time calamities by land and sea, by fire and flood, by pestilence and famine, when the end of all things is at hand. It is also a confession of settled, grounded trust to be made today with prayer without despondency, for Jesus Christ Himself is that very present help and strength to all who put their trust in Him, present with His followers always even to the end of the world.

Upheaval and Refuge

The roaring and troubled waters and the shaking mountains picture overwhelming turmoil and upheaval that cannot undo God's help for those who rely on Him. Even when the world seems to collapse around them and the earth is shaken, His people need not fear, because He remains a refuge and strength and their trouble cannot overcome those who rely on Him for help. The verse belongs to a hymn celebrating God as His people's refuge and strength in trouble, sung after Judah trusted God and He delivered them from their enemies.

The waters roaring and troubled and the mountains shaking describe literal upheavals of earth and sea, occurring alongside fear, plagues, pestilence, famine, and death. The same upheaval, so great that the earth seems displaced and mountains are cast into the sea with its waters roaring and troubled, applies to the terrible events that will occur as signs of Christ's coming. Those signs include fear, warfare, pestilence, famine, and death.

Even when the earth seems to heave and the mountains shake, God remains a refuge that cannot be moved. The upheaval of land and sea contrasts with His unfailing kindness and unremoved covenant of peace. Those who trust Him are never forsaken.

Song at Final Deliverance

The roaring waters and shaking mountains become the triumphant song of confidence sung by the faithful at their sudden final deliverance, declaring that God is their refuge and strength and near help in trouble so they need not fear amid terror and convulsed nature. That deliverance comes from death at the hands of wicked men, after a sign of hope appears in the dark sky. Those who sacrificed all for Christ and proved loyal to Him under threat of death are then made secure and hidden in God. A sudden change comes over them from pale anxiety to glowing faith and love, and they sing in holy trust and joy even while the earth is torn up and nature is convulsed in terror around them.

At that day of God, after being tested and showing fidelity to Christ even in the face of death, the faithful are secure and hidden as in the secret of the Lord's pavilion. They are sheltered from the dark and terrible tyranny of men transformed to demons. While darkness brings severity and wrath to transgressors of God's law, hope and joy are given to the faithful. Their faces glow with wonder, faith, and love as they declare fearlessness amid roaring waters and shaking mountains because God is their refuge and strength and very present help in trouble.

Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus have a defense without fear amid end-time calamities by land and sea, by fire and flood, by pestilence and famine, by accidents and earthquakes. This safety holds when the natural world is in violent upheaval, with roaring water and shaking mountains and the earth removed, when the end of all things is at hand and Babylon comes into remembrance before God and the Lord is at the door. The righteousness of Christ goes before them and the glory of the Lord guards behind them.

Fearless Trust Today

Even when violent uproar shakes the firmest things, there is no cause for fear because God is a refuge and strength and an ever-present help in trouble. The right response is a confession of settled, grounded trust, made with prayer and without any despondency. That trust holds fast the Word of God while continuing the work of preaching the gospel to every creature, in defiance of satanic opposition and increasing pressure to block the way.

Jesus Christ himself is that very present help and strength to all who put their trust in him, present with his followers always even to the end of the world. The fearless confession is that of those who commit the keeping of their souls to Jesus and look to him as author and finisher of faith, so there is no need to fear or despond even when the earth is shaken and upheaved. This applies to difficulties within and without, especially stormy tempers and natures. The all-powerful Saviour who calmed the Sea of Galilee is equal to any emergency and can subdue any nature, quell any temper, and conquer every difficulty in his strength for the heart surrendered to his keeping.

Amid overwhelming upheaval pictured as roaring waters and shaking mountains, those who trust him need not fear. The promise reaches the troubled heart in particular: Christ can calm it and help his followers face difficulties when they surrender themselves to him.
