Jerusalem Secure While Mountains Fall Into the Seaby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 46:5

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

The “her” who shall not be moved is the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High, made glad by a river with its streams, which is His people and church. They are the church He loves and keeps as His commandment-keeping people, and He Himself is their strength and sufficiency. God dwells and is present in the midst of His city and people, in the midst of the church. Because of that indwelling presence she shall not be moved, meaning she cannot be shaken or overthrown but stands firm and unshaken.

Her firmness is as secure as the firmness of God’s own throne. God shall help her right early, meaning He comes to their aid at dawn or daybreak with speedy, prompt help in due time. His presence means refuge and strength and very present help in trouble, so fear and despondency are removed even when the earth is shaken, the heathen rage, and pressure hedges up the way. Though there is no lasting resting place on earth and life is as a shadow, the Lord of hosts is with His people and the God of Jacob is their refuge, the same God who is their God forever and ever and their guide even unto death.

Judah’s deliverance from its enemies demonstrated that God was their refuge and defender, giving them reason to rejoice and sing with understanding. For those doing gospel work, the verse calls for trusting the Lord, being settled and grounded in truth, keeping prayers ascending, grasping infinite power by united faith with the Source of all power, and doing their best in faith confident that sufficiency is provided. Because the Sun of Righteousness has risen upon it, the church is called to shine as a city that cannot be hidden.

Confidence that we shall not be moved applies to trusting God through illness and difficulty. The promise of prompt help applies to giving timely support for poor people and workers who have lost their jobs after taking their stand for the truth.
