The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
The Lord of hosts is with His people, and the God of Jacob is their refuge, giving assurance of divine presence, strength, and protection as a song of faith amid trouble and upheaval. Judah's returning army could sing these words with understanding because God had proved Himself their fortress and deliverer by giving them victory over their enemies. Though on earth there is no resting place and human days are as a shadow of strangers and sojourners, God stays with His people as a very present help in trouble, so they need not fear even if the earth is removed and mountains are carried into the sea. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High, and because God is in her midst she shall not be moved, for He will help her at the dawn of morning, and this God is His people's God forever and will guide them even unto death.
Churches have evidence that the promise is fulfilled for them when they reject sin, live with active and earnest piety, submit to God's word, and faithfully discharge their religious duties. Individuals can truthfully claim the promise when they surrender their whole hearts to God and faithfully carry out their responsibilities, living to please God rather than resting on pleasing neighbors or measuring their approval. The assurance can be truthfully claimed by those who seek God's approval and turn to Him in obedience, with prayer and watchfulness needed to avoid walking in darkness. The verse gives confidence to those who take God's side and live out their faith that, with God as their refuge, they can let their light shine in the world, trusting that good will follow their faithful work.
God is mightier than the enemies of His people and will help those who heed His reproof and counsel. God is personally present as refuge and strength standing behind those who preach the Word, providing full sufficiency for consecrated workers in open fields. Therefore in sadness, satanic opposition, and increasing pressure to block the work, they should not look on the dark side, fear, or speak despondency, but keep prayers ascending, stay settled and grounded in truth, hold fast the Word, grasp infinite power by faith united to the Source of all power, and continue bearing testimony and preaching the gospel to every creature as long as life lasts.
In severe illness and pain, the verse means finding shelter and comfort in Christ and confidence in God even while suffering, with His presence bringing light and blessing that sustains trust without murmuring. The mighty God of Jacob is the one to turn to for help, blessing, and guidance, so the verse calls a person to seek God earnestly and rely on Him even when making decisions about work and business. Depending on the God of Jacob means trusting that the Lord will go with a person and be strength, support, and helper while following the path of duty.
