Psalms 46:8

Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

The verse is a universal summons to come and look attentively at the mighty acts of the Lord, including the desolations He has brought upon the powers arrayed against His people. In Judah's deliverance that beholding had a concrete historical form, when He overthrew the enemies of Judah and shattered their weapons of war. Seen in that light, the verse confesses God as refuge and strength, and therefore gives His people ground for rejoicing and for confident trust in Him.

That same confession becomes the posture of God's people in seasons of sadness, satanic opposition, and mounting pressure against the work of the gospel. Instead of yielding to fear and despondency, they hold fast to the Word and pray without ceasing. They keep on preaching, calling all to behold His works and the desolations He has made in the earth.
