Psalms 47:8

God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

The psalm containing this declaration was presumably written by Solomon during his reign. It declares that God is King over all peoples and nations and that His rule extends throughout the universe.

Human rebellion and the worship of other gods do not change His rightful ownership and kingship. By giving earthly dominion to humanity He made people agents of His rule without surrendering His claim to the earth. He reigns from a throne marked by holiness, for He is holy and sits upon the throne of His holiness.

His holiness is the strength of His justice, and justice and judgment are the foundation of His throne. His kingdom is committed to supporting upright subjects, and no one can restrain Him or challenge Him when He judges. His victory in delivering Judah proved Him their fortress and deliverer and displayed His sovereign rule, so the people could sing this truth with understanding.

Because He is holy in all His acts, people should be holy, with their acts, words, and thoughts all holy as He is holy. Because God reigns, His people can cease doubting even amid sorrow and hardship, enduring patiently in hope that sorrow will end.
