For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.
This God is His people's own God forever and ever, and He will guide them through all of life even to death. Those who put their trust in Him find Him a very present help in need, leading them by His counsel through the Holy Spirit, His providences, and the teachings of His Word, and because He will never leave nor forsake them they claim Him with humility yet firm confidence. He proved Himself such a fortress and deliverer to Judah when they obeyed His command to stand still and see His salvation and to fear not nor be dismayed, trusting wholly in Him until He made them rejoice over their enemies and return laden with spoil to Jerusalem with joy and music to His house. As Creator of all things, in whom are all treasures of wisdom, He has conquered every power of evil in behalf of the young and promises to be their guide, asking their homage and calling them to grow constantly in grace and in right knowledge of Him, which is life and peace. Remembering Him daily as their God leads His people to consider His goodness and glory and to give willingly and cheerfully of what He has entrusted to them for His work, laying up treasure in heaven unto eternal glory.
God Our Guide Forever
This God is His people's own God forever and ever, remaining theirs through the whole of life and guiding them even unto death. Judah could sing this with understanding after He had proved Himself their fortress and their deliverer. In obedience to the command to stand still and see His salvation and to fear not nor be dismayed, they put their trust wholly in Him, and He made them to rejoice over their enemies. So laden with spoil they returned with joy to Jerusalem, with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the Lord, with great cause for rejoicing.
Because earthly life has no lasting home and is like a shadow, God is His people's enduring refuge and guide. His enduring care and guidance as their God forever, guiding even to death, are linked with Christ's sacrifice on the cross. His unchanging presence and guidance are shown in the promise to be with His followers to the end of the world. Christ walks with those who bear His burden and sustains them, and because He leads and teaches them they need not fret under His commandments.
Trusting His Guiding Care
To those who put their trust in Him, this God is a very present help in time of need. He makes His goodness pass before them and leads them by His counsel, instructing them and leading them in the way of the Lord through His Holy Spirit, His providences, and the teachings of His Word. Because He promises never to leave nor forsake them, the declaration that He is their God forever and will guide even unto death is spoken with humility yet with firm confidence as a personal claim upon Him forever.
The Creator of all things, with whom are all the treasures of wisdom, has promised to be the guide of the youth. He has conquered all the powers of evil in their behalf and asks for their homage. The young should therefore be constantly growing in grace and in knowledge of the truth, for there is no higher knowledge than knowing Him rightly, which is life and peace, and no purer or deeper affection than love for the Saviour. His people are called to look to Him rather than trust their own wisdom, because His guidance is dependable and remains theirs forever even unto death. That assurance that He remains their God forever and guides them throughout life even to death gives comfort when discouragement presses heavily.
He is a sure refuge and guide in severe suffering, giving comfort and strength and confidence when pain and hope seem overwhelming. The verse is a daily personal reminder and confession that God belongs to His people forever, calling believers to remember each day who He is to them. Remembering Him as their God should lead them to consider His goodness and glory and to give willingly and cheerfully of what He has entrusted to them for His work. Such giving lays up treasure in heaven and leads to eternal glory. He is personally theirs forever, and remembering His perfections and displays of glory shows what He gives to humanity, for those who belong to Him as heirs with Christ will share the eternal riches of heaven and the eternal weight of glory.
