Psalms 49:8

(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

The redemption of the soul is precious beyond all price and beyond the value of all the riches of the world, so no one can pay God a ransom for another person, even a brother, and wealth cannot secure eternal life or cover even the smallest sin. Fallen people cannot redeem themselves or atone for one another, and no one in this world is high enough to give such a ransom, for even a perfect human life would not be a sufficient offering for sin. Christ alone has paid that price, dying in humanity's place and suffering for sin at infinite cost to complete the redemption. Salvation is therefore an individual work, for each person has a soul to save or to lose and must accept the benefits of redemption and perfect Christian character before death overtakes them. That opportunity will not remain forever, so none should neglect the present chance to make peace with God.

Beyond All Human Price

The redemption of the soul is precious beyond price and beyond the value of all the riches of the world, so that no one can pay God a ransom to redeem another person, not even a brother. Wealth cannot secure redemption or eternal life, and no amount of worldly wealth can redeem a perishing soul. Riches cannot satisfy the soul, cannot cover even the smallest sin, and cannot serve as a ransom for transgression. Trusting in riches, or in silver and gold, cannot provide spiritual hope for those who possess earthly abundance.

Redemption is beyond human price, power, and worth, so fallen, sinful people cannot atone for one another and cannot redeem themselves from sin. No one in this world is high enough to give a ransom for souls. Even a perfect human life would not be a sufficient offering for the sin of humanity, for the redemption of a soul is beyond the worth of any human life.

That it ceases forever means the soul's redemption is of great value and the opportunity to obtain it will not remain forever. People should not neglect their opportunity to make peace with God while they have it. Merely believing in the value of the soul and in its coming redemption is not enough.

Christ Alone Paid Ransom

No human wealth can pay God a ransom to redeem another person, for the redemption of a soul is too precious for riches to secure. Its value lies beyond all the riches of the world, so no amount of worldly wealth can redeem a perishing soul. Christ alone has paid the price to ransom human beings, dying in humanity's place and suffering for sin. That sacrifice was made at infinite and immense cost and completed the price of redemption.

Human beings cannot redeem themselves from sin, for the redemption of the soul is beyond their own power. Christ became humanity's substitute and surety, providing a way for the guilty to return to loyalty to God. He took human nature and faced the temptations that overcame Adam without turning from allegiance to God.

Individual Call to Respond

Salvation is an individual work and an individual responsibility, for no person can pay the ransom for another soul and each person has a soul to save or to lose. Christ alone has paid the price to redeem people at immense cost, and each person is responsible for accepting the benefits of that redemption for themselves. Each must make preparation for a home in heaven among the pure, holy angels before death overtakes them, and each must perfect Christian character for themselves. Refusing those benefits leaves a person justly liable to retribution, having justly earned it by having no interest to avail themselves of what was provided.

A husband cannot pay the ransom for his wife's soul and cannot save her in the judgment from the condemnation of God if she dishonors God. Therefore when a husband's requirements come between a wife and God she must not obey them, but must obey the law of God and His commandments, with fidelity to God supreme over every human claim. No mortal can pay a ransom for another person's soul in the day of judgment, so salvation remains an individual work that no other can do for another. If leading men reject the message of truth God sends for this time, their unbelief does not make the message error and gives no excuse to others for neglecting to receive it. No one is to be followed but Christ, and no man is to be taken as pattern.

Because no one in this world is high enough to give a ransom for souls and the redemption of the soul is precious beyond any human payment, what the world thinks has nothing to do with salvation and worldly persons are not the ones to study. Believers are not their own, so Christ and His Word must be studied to know what is truth, and truth must not only be understood but obeyed. Riches cannot cover even the smallest sin or serve as a ransom for transgression, for a soul's redemption is beyond the power of wealth. Only repentance, confession, forsaking sin, humility, and a contrite heart are acceptable to God. No amount of worldly wealth can redeem a perishing soul because human redemption is beyond price, and Christ paid that price by dying in humanity's place. Remembering the immense cost of redemption makes worldly riches seem of little value and awakens praise, humility, and devotion to God.
