Psalms 50:3
Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
Our God Himself will come openly and publicly in majesty and power without keeping silence, and this is Christ's glorious visible second coming in the last great day to usher in the reign of righteousness. A devouring flaming fire goes before Him and a violent tempest surrounds Him, which is the terrible light of His presence and the shaking and destruction attending the final judgment. He calls heaven and earth together to witness as He judges, and heaven declares His righteousness because God Himself is judge, gathering His covenant people who have made covenant with Him by sacrifice. Every case is reviewed before Him, with every thought, word, and motive revealed from the books of heaven and every soul tried by the perfect standard of His law, so that His public arrival as Judge fills the wicked with terror when judgment falls on the unsheltered sinner. That coming judgment makes the present day of grace the time to prepare, to repent and be converted that sins may be blotted out in heart-searching and earnest prayer, for love of the world and selfishness will excuse no one who professes to belong to Him.
The Coming Described
God Himself is to come openly and publicly, in majesty and power, and He will not keep silence. His coming is no longer silent but manifest, as a powerful public judge whose arrival is seen and heard by all. That coming is the time when He calls heaven and earth together to witness as He judges His people, and heaven declares His righteousness because God Himself is judge. His voice calling to judgment is heard by heaven and earth, with upheaval in heaven and on earth before Him.
A devouring, flaming fire goes before Him and a violent tempest surrounds Him. The earth trembles before Him, and His arrival comes amid overwhelming, earth-shaking upheaval. That fire is the terrible light of His presence and the destructive events accompanying the final judgment. This is Christ's glorious, visible second coming in power and majesty on the last great day to usher in the reign of righteousness, a world-shaking event in which the greatness of God is revealed.
The Judgment of His People
God will come openly and will not remain silent, and His coming is the time when He calls heaven and earth together to witness as He judges His people. Heaven itself declares His righteousness in that judgment because God Himself is the judge. In that same judgment He gathers His covenant people, those who have made a covenant with Him by sacrifice.
To stand in that day is to have every case reviewed before God, with every thought and word and motive revealed exactly as registered in the books of heaven. Every soul is tried by the one perfect standard of the law of God. Account is then required for the blood of souls, with ministers and the flocks they influenced gathered together around the great white throne when God makes inquisition for souls.
As a powerful and public judge, His arrival fills the wicked with terror when His judgments fall upon the unsheltered head of the sinner. Those who have worked on Satan's side incur a fearful loss at His coming on the last great day. Those who have given themselves to anarchy and war and strife will then see how many souls were lost because they failed to take their stand under the rule of Christ.
Call to Be Ready
The coming judgment makes the present day of grace the time to prepare to stand. God will come openly and powerfully, with fire before Him and violent tempest around Him, to bring the judgment of His people when heaven and earth hear His call. That picture of God coming openly in fiery, tempestuous judgment, summoning heaven and earth as witnesses, gathering the saints who have made a covenant with Him by sacrifice, and having the heavens declare His righteousness because He is judge, belongs to the judgment in which His people must be found ready to stand.
He therefore calls people to repent and be converted so their sins may be blotted out. That coming brings the day when heaven and earth hear God's voice calling to judgment, with His judgments about to fall on the unsheltered head of the sinner, so the present time must be given to heart-searching, deep humiliation and earnest agonizing prayer instead of visiting, feasting, worldly honor, self-exaltation, pride and ambition. It is read in connection with the time of judgment when every case is reviewed before God. To stand in that day is to have every thought, word and motive revealed as registered in the books of heaven, to have every soul tried by the one perfect standard of the law of God, to answer when God makes inquisition for the blood of souls, with ministers and the flocks they influenced gathered around the great white throne.
His judgment of His covenant people warns that love of the world and selfishness will not excuse those who profess to belong to Him. He comes in a powerful, unmistakable display, with devouring fire and violent tempest around Him, to judge His people, calling the heavens and earth as witnesses and gathering those who have made a covenant with Him by sacrifice. That setting connects God's judgment with His call to His covenant people, making profession no shelter for worldliness and self-seeking.
