Psalm 51 Verses Over a Snowy River and Mountainsby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

David prayed for inward cleansing and renewal after reproof for his sin, when he confessed his transgression of God's law, humbled his heart before God, and sought pardon and restoration to favor, presence, and joy. A clean heart is the inward fountain of life washed from impurity, defilement and idols and surrendered to God, and a right spirit is a steady, upright and steadfast spirit within in likeness to Christ. Only God can perform this work, for human effort cannot make the heart pure, but by His mercy and the creating, regenerating power of the Holy Spirit He gives a new heart and spirit and causes obedience. True repentance asks for more than release from condemnation; it asks for purity, holiness and transformation of heart, a new moral birth without which none can enter the kingdom. Every believer is to make this plea his own daily and earnestly, in helpless dependence on God, in private wrestling prayer until strengthened, cleansed and renewed. The one thus renewed lives a new life from a pure fountain, with right words and actions, kindness, patience and peace, and then teaches transgressors God's ways so sinners are converted.

David's Repentant Prayer

The prayer belongs to the time after the prophet was sent with God's reproof for sin, when David confessed, humbled his heart, and declared God just in all His dealings. It is the course for one who has departed from the Lord, even an exalted and honored king, showing how to respond when conviction exposes transgression of God's law. That response recognizes the gravity of sin and seeks pardon through Christ, with the heart work needed for true repentance and lasting conversion.

David bowed under chastisement without cherishing stubborn resistance to God's expressed will and without rising up in rebellion against reproof. His contrition was as profound as his guilt and his humility as great as his error, in sincere penitence of a contrite and humble spirit. He kept confidence in God, loving and serving and honoring Him, relying on His mercy, accepting His decision as just and merciful, and bearing no hatred for the prophet who spoke the rebuke. He poured out his soul in penitence and humiliation without delay, valuing God's favor above all else, so that loss of a crown could be endured but loss of God's favor could not.

The plea asks for mercy according to loving-kindness and tender mercies, to blot out transgression, wash from iniquity, cleanse from sin, purge and make white, and desire truth in the inward parts with a broken and contrite heart. It asks to remain in God's presence, not to be cast away or deprived of the Holy Spirit, to have the joy and gladness and the joy of salvation restored, and to be upheld and sustained by His free Spirit. With that inner cleansing and steadfast renewal, joined to trust in Christ's blood and the work of the Holy Spirit, the sinner can then teach transgressors God's ways so sinners are converted and led back to God.

David refused to conceal his guilt but made his repentance a sacred song to be sung in the public assemblies of Israel before priests and judges, princes and men of war. In that open recounting of his sin, his repentance, and his hope of pardon through God's mercy, he desired that others be instructed by the sad history of his fall. So the knowledge of his fall was preserved to the latest generation. It is the plea of a truly penitent sinner for a cleansed heart and renewed right spirit within, and his penitent humble response after departing from righteousness was forgiven when God received him into covenant relation.

Clean Heart Renewed Spirit

True reformation must begin in the heart because the heart controls the course of life and conduct, and out of the heart are the issues of life, so the inward fountain must be remade. It is one of the most earnest prayers in the Bible, asking God to give inner cleanness and a steady, upright spirit within, to remain in His presence and to keep His Holy Spirit. A clean heart enables a life of purity, with the will brought under Christ's direction into a new life shaped by righteousness and holiness. The answered prayer opens the heart to the sweet influences of the Spirit instead of closing it in selfishness, yields the human will to Christ, and makes practical religion breathe its fragrance everywhere as a savor of life unto life, with Christ abiding within the pure, cleansed soul. The result of being thus renewed is teaching transgressors God's ways so that sinners are converted, and the same prayer belongs when unloving and oppressive dealings with brethren must be repented of.

A clean heart means the inward fountain of life cleansed from impurity, defilement, and idols, with will and way surrendered to God and made new and fit for undivided service. The heart must be cleansed from every impurity before it can be accepted by God, with every motive and word examined by the Word and with divine grace enlightening it to understand God's mercy and love, until washed whiter than snow. The appeal rests on belonging to God by creation and redemption, and is joined to cleansing and sanctification through the blood of the Lamb. This inward renewal is the new creation in Christ, shown by loving righteousness and hating iniquity and by yielding to Christ's command.

A right spirit means a steady, upright, steadfast spirit within, and its lesson must be practiced in purity of spirit and Christlikeness rather than mere nominal profession. A merely nominal profession of sacred truth does not refine the life, and a life lacking purity and Christlikeness has little power with God and an unsavory influence. The work belongs in consecrating oneself to God and seeking the conversion of family members, with the heart subdued and made contrite through the creating, regenerating power of the Holy Spirit.

When the heart is pure, words and actions will be right, for God cares more about what a person truly is than what is claimed or how one looks. Inner rightness is what counts, because each person is tested by principles rather than profession, talk, or appearance, and life flows out of the heart as fruit flows from the tree made good. God Himself must give a clean inner life before a person will walk in His statutes and keep His commandments to do them, and a new moral taste must be formed before there is love for obeying His law. That happens through connection with heaven that restores those made in God's image to share the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world through lust, issuing in supreme love to God shown by obedience to all His commandments and implicit trust in Christ, with the great principles of truth fixed in the heart and seen in the life by love, faith, humility, and obedience. A clean heart is inward purity of character and pure words, the true beauty and loveliness that makes a lady or a gentleman rather than outward apparel, the most beautiful garment to wear as the robe of Christ's righteousness giving standing anywhere, to be taught to children in the home together with enjoying the beauties and glories of nature, seeing the love of God expressed in every flower, and looking up from nature to nature's God.

God Alone Creates Renewal

Only God can create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within, so the prayer is an earnest plea for inward change rather than confidence in one's own efforts to reform. A pure life and noble character depend on renewal by divine grace, for human effort apart from Christ cannot produce them, and to attempt to build a noble, virtuous character apart from grace is to build on shifting sand that will surely be overthrown in the fierce storms of temptation. Recognizing helplessness without human power to make the heart clean is the first step, and God calls the sinner to receive a new heart and spirit. This cleansing and renewal are sought from God together with remaining in His presence and keeping the Holy Spirit, and the renewed person can then teach transgressors His ways. The cleansing turns from sin and evil thoughts toward a pure heart, unity, and love as the work of the Lord's Spirit, and having received the heavenly gift in answer believers go on toward perfection, kept by God's power through faith.

The answer is a new creation that no finite person can perform, done by the creating and regenerating power of the Holy Spirit upon entire, unreserved surrender. The sincere, contrite prayer asks God to create the clean heart and renew the right spirit with change beginning in the heart, and God hears and answers with the promise to give a new heart and put a new spirit within through every phase of experience. It is one of the most earnest prayers in the Word, prayed for a true Christian experience by beginning at the beginning and seeking God most earnestly. Those who receive the new heart have it kept soft and tender by heaven, have the selfish spirit cleansed from the soul, labor earnestly with humility looking to Jesus for guidance and encouragement, and together grow as a building fitly framed into a holy temple.

Cleansing is grounded in God's mercy and the Lamb's cleansing blood, received by sincere, trusting prayer that cleanses guilt and inward defilement, puts His Spirit in the heart, and brings the will into harmony with His will. The sinner must utter the cry with earnest soul hunger to separate from sin, since none can continue in sin and stand faultless before God and God will not tolerate sin. Christ alone saves from sin by giving His righteousness and placing it to the sinner's account, and by moral power received from Christ through the Holy Spirit as His representative, who leads to Christ, links the soul to the Saviour, and causes identification with Christ in purity and holiness, grounded in God giving His only Son by infinite sacrifice to show sin's terrible character and condemn sin in the flesh. The prayer is answered when the Sun of Righteousness shines into the heart to give knowledge of the glory of Jesus Christ, which the Holy Spirit does by glorifying Christ and showing what is His to the soul, purging and washing whiter than snow, keeping in God's presence without taking away the Holy Spirit, restoring the joy of salvation and upholding with a free Spirit so the forgiven one then teaches transgressors and sinners are converted. A clean heart is a precious gift received from the Saviour by those who believe in and value His sacrifice, bringing communion with Christ, joy and peace, and a life united with Him.

God answers the earnest, sincere prayer for a clean heart by cleansing from sin and idols, giving a new heart and spirit, removing the stony heart and giving a heart of flesh, and putting His Spirit within to enable walking in His statutes and obeying His judgments. This is the heart renewal required for the new birth, where the point is that the heart is renewed. Those who hear the truth and repent of evil works and turn from them have hope when the prayer comes from sincere lips, and there is hope even for those who betrayed the cause into enemies' hands if blindness is removed.

Right longing begins only when the Holy Spirit works in the heart to show the true spiritual condition and need, and the heartfelt plea marks the beginning of genuine heart reformation that must be real for the work to last. Making the heart right with God and being born again are necessary for salvation. The clean heart and right spirit are gifts of God's Son purchased at infinite cost, not the product of independent, uninspired human judgment. They are received when self-sufficiency, self-esteem, and pride are laid aside at the feet of Jesus, believers press together to be of one mind and judgment with God as Leader and follow His footsteps in safety, and approach Him with lowly, childlike trust. Christ works to create them in the person and the person cooperates with Christ, so divine effort and human effort are united, receiving grace and the treasures of eternal life as a free and everlasting gift, with white robes, the crown of righteousness, and exceeding eternal glory laid up for those who love God and keep His commandments.

Repentance Forgiveness and Rebirth

True religion demands more than outward form, intellectual belief, or religious theory, for God must cleanse the heart and renew the spirit within as a matter to be settled sincerely with Him. The heart itself must be cleansed, not merely particular wrong acts repented of, because wrongdoing flows from an unclean, unconverted heart. Those who seek this inward heart work in prayer receive the new heart God gives, and a cleansed heart enables them to serve as lights, live in unity, bear fruit, draw near to God, and put self aside in Christ. When sin is removed through the blood of sprinkling, the soul is moved by love for Jesus and hatred of sin.

Repentance seeks more than pardon; it asks God to cleanse the heart and renew a right spirit, bringing purity, holiness, and restored harmony and communion with God. God's forgiveness is not merely a judicial act setting free from condemnation for sin, but reclaiming from sin by the outflow of redeeming love that transforms the heart into a clean heart with a renewed right spirit. The sinner must utter this cry to separate from sin with earnest soul hunger, because men cannot continue in sin and stand faultless before God and God will not tolerate sin. God answers by giving a new heart, and the cleansing comes from Christ alone, who saves from sin by giving His righteousness and placing it to the sinner's account, and from moral power received from Christ through the Holy Spirit as Christ's representative, who leads to Christ, links the soul to the Saviour, and causes identification with Christ in purity and holiness. The ground for this is that God gave His only Son by infinite sacrifice to show the terrible character of sin and to condemn sin in the flesh, and God restores the joy of salvation and gives praise a new place in the life.

The psalm with its surrounding plea to remove sin, restore joy, and uphold by His Spirit gives assurance and comfort to the sinner who comes to God for cleansing and renewal and to those who have sinned and need to return to Jesus. It shows genuine repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ in the midst of human struggle and temptation. It brings encouragement to fallen souls struggling under guilt and ready to give up to despair, showing that sincere repentance and confession are accepted by God even though the sinner still suffers for the transgression, and calling the fallen to take courage, repent, and try again to walk in the way of God's commandments. It means frank acknowledgment of sin from the heart, saying I have sinned and admitting a spirit unlike Christ, seeing one's own motives and temper of spirit, being restored to God and to oneself, and trusting God fully to do His work. It is prayed with sorrow for errors and wrongs, in humility and contrition without parading goodness before God, living in the light of the cross and clinging to it with nothing to bring in the hands.

The verse teaches the work of regeneration required to enter the kingdom of heaven as David's prayer under inspiration of the Holy Spirit for inner purity and a renewed spirit. It means a new moral birth, a cleansing from sin, and a renewing of knowledge and holiness, which is holiness of heart rather than maintaining an appearance of holiness or rigid outward obedience to the letter of the law while violating its spirit. This inner change is the work of grace by the Spirit of God that removes the sinful heart, renews the mind, purifies the life, ennobles the character, and prepares for God's kingdom. Jesus set it before Nicodemus as prophecy to illustrate grace upon the heart, a prayer for a new heart and new spirit within, taking away the stony heart and giving a heart of flesh that will walk in His statutes and keep His ordinances. Because this truth was already present in Israel's Scriptures, Israel had no excuse for blindness about the new birth, and rigid precision in obeying the law entitles no man to enter heaven, for even a just and honorable man like Nicodemus must experience new birth through Jesus Christ as the only condition for salvation and entrance into God's kingdom, and unless born again cannot discern the kingdom Christ came to set up. The surrounding words connect this renewal with retaining God's presence and Spirit, recovering the joy of salvation, being upheld, and then teaching God's ways so transgressors are taught and sinners turn and are converted.

Making the heart right with God and being born again are necessary for salvation, and the heartfelt plea of those who see their true spiritual condition marks the beginning of genuine heart reformation brought by the Holy Spirit, which must be real for the work to last. This is the heart renewal required for the new birth, and the way it is accomplished is not the point so long as the heart is renewed. God answers by giving a new heart and spirit, replacing the stony heart with a responsive heart of flesh and putting His Spirit within so the person can obey His statutes and judgments. This work is essential to godliness and must take place in those who accept the truth before they can keep God's commandments and do His word, and the heart and character must be purified and entirely transformed in renewal necessary to see the kingdom of God. In the setting of the hyssop purification ritual this cleansing is linked to the blood of Christ and to a thorough, continuing work in the repentant person, whose cleansed life is consecrated wholly to God including family, household, property, and all that belongs to them.

Faith is more than acknowledging Christ as the world's Redeemer and includes longing for personal salvation and a better knowledge of Jesus expressed as sincere personal plea for cleansing and renewal. Its lesson must be practiced and shown in purity of spirit and Christlikeness. A merely nominal profession of sacred truth does not refine the life, and a life lacking purity and Christlikeness has little power with God and an unsavory influence.

Earnest Daily Prayer

This is David's preparation prayer for acceptable service, and every believer is to make it their own prayer for daily conversion through earnest prayer and communion so heart and life are made right. It is to be offered daily for inward cleansing and a renewed spirit to keep crookedness out of character and business dealings and to keep the last six commandments summed up in love for neighbor with love and sympathy for those in need. A pure heart and right spirit are gifts from God to be sought with all diligence. Seeking them is a first step in salvation, prayed in helpless dependence on God as the only refuge for help, support, comfort, covering, pardon, and healing, trusting the prayer is heard and answered. He is the fountain of life who makes and keeps the inner life pure by freely giving life springing up within the heart unto eternity, with plenteous grace to pardon and healing streams to abound.

The prayer is to be pleaded alone in the secret closet to obtain grace for victory over the world, over besetments, passions, and a sin-sick heart. It is to be urged earnestly, sincerely, and fervently, as eagerly as if mortal life were at stake, wrestling Jacob-like and agonizing with effort as in the garden, taking time without hurrying or praying carelessly and not leaving until strengthened in God. So continued, it awakens unutterable longing for salvation and brings sweet evidence of pardoned sin, peace that passes understanding, thorough reformation, the fruits of the Spirit dwelling within, and shining as lights that help and bless rather than hinder. Kept up by watching and praying with a sincere sense of perishing without help and panting after God, it keeps evil besetments under so the grace of God appears in the life.

It is to be pleaded earnestly and sincerely in private prayer in dependence on God for help, with deep longing for salvation and assurance of pardon, rather than dwelling on the sins of others. From sincere lips, by those who hear truth and repent of evil works, it carries hope, for God answers by cleansing, giving a new heart and spirit, and putting His Spirit within to cause walking in His statutes and keeping His judgments in obedience. Thus prayed, grace strengthens to keep sinful besetments under control.

It is one of the most earnest prayers in Scripture and teaches beginning at the beginning by individual surrender of the soul, bringing truth into the center of the being to have the heart made right through the new creating power of the Holy Spirit cleansing moral defilement. Men in every position, superiors, inferiors, or equals, and especially ministers with weighty responsibility, need to pray it. When answered it makes the fountain pure so pure streams flow forth in precious experience and lessons that can then be taught to others, since no one can lead others to a standard not reached. Everyone must begin the battle for victory and the work of overcoming in the wayward heart, guarding it by constant watchfulness and prayer, especially against hereditary and cultivated tendencies, and the fervent sincere plea receives the promise of a new heart.

Renewed Life and Service

The verse is the prayer from the heart for those whose character is marred by a passionate, hasty disposition, to be prayed urgently while seeking the Lord. It asks God to cleanse the heart from sin and create it clean, to renew a right spirit within, to wash clean, to give a correct estimate of Jesus Christ and His merits, and to lead by His Spirit. The prayer belongs with asking not to be cast away from God's presence nor deprived of the Holy Spirit, asking for the joy of salvation to be restored and for God's Spirit to sustain. The changed one who is so renewed can then teach transgressors God's ways so that sinners are converted to Him.

True reformation must begin in the heart because the heart controls the course of life, and this is one of the most earnest prayers in the Bible for inner cleanness and a steady, upright spirit within. Cleansing and renewal are sought from God rather than achieved by human effort, for a sinful, polluted soul. The prayer continues by asking to remain in God's presence and to keep His Holy Spirit, with praise and a broken, contrite heart. The result of being thus renewed is teaching transgressors God's ways so that sinners turn to Him.

Workers must begin with their own hearts and seek God's new creating and converting power within them, for seeking a clean heart is the right beginning and foundation of Christian character because the heart shapes life's course. It is to be prayed in humility and true self-sight when conviction comes for personal sin rather than the sins of others, by those whose lives are defective, who have lost time and failed to obtain a correct experience and knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ and to represent Christ in character. Praying it as never before makes them vessels fit for the Master's use through whom the Holy Spirit can communicate, changing them from a scourge to the church into a savor of life unto life. With Christ abiding in the heart, that creating power can shape words and help reach others, which is necessary for those who speak for God, especially ministers and believers whose work is weighty and responsible. God provides the needed grace, and the Holy Spirit works with earnest effort to bring growth in grace, so that persistent seeking gives way from dissension to unity, purity, and love, with contemplation of Christ's character transforming into His likeness and coming to Jesus bringing acceptance and praise to God.

A clean heart is needed for Christ to abide within, and a cleansed soul opens the heart to the Holy Spirit's influence and yields the human will to Christ. Out of the heart are the issues of life, so the heart is to be opened to the sweet influences of God's Spirit instead of closed in selfishness, and the will yielded to Christ's command in love of righteousness and hatred of iniquity. The prayer is to be prayed when unloving and oppressive dealings with brethren must be repented of, asking God to create inward purity and to cleanse and purify the inward fountain from which all conduct flows. Every person should pray for a clean heart and renewed right spirit in order to live as Christ lived in purity, truth, and righteousness, for Jesus died that people may live His life and teaches how to live it. The answered prayer produces the words and conduct that flow from a pure heart, making practical religion breathe its fragrance everywhere as a savor of life unto life.

The new heart and new spirit God gives replace hardness and the stony heart with a heart of flesh, enabling obedience and walking in statutes and keeping judgments. A clean heart is to be sought from God daily in order to keep the last six commandments summed up in love for neighbor and to help those in need of love and sympathy. The result is continual kindness rather than fits and starts, with a decided change in attitude, deportment, words and actions toward all, in continual kindness and sympathy, treating others with Christlike love, refusing to magnify faults or place others in an unfavorable light, patiently seeking to restore and heal and bind up instead of exposing faults. This inward renewal gives the meek, lowly spirit of Christ that makes a person a peacemaker, avoiding quarrels and angry answers and bringing happiness at home and peace to those nearby. A person absorbed in others' faults or fixated on human relationships can ask God to cleanse the heart and redirect attention to Him and to Jesus, to behold God steadily and become like Him in character.

Those who cry thus to God receive His promise to give a new heart and put a new spirit within, for this is David's cry and one of the most earnest prayers in the Word of God. A heart made right with God through the Holy Spirit's power makes a new life, with God's truth controlling the heart in righteousness as the power of God unto salvation, giving a sense of divine power and grace within and causing fruits of righteousness to appear. It makes the Holy Scriptures a treasure house of knowledge, and through obedience to the Word leads to becoming heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ who sit with Him at the marriage supper of the Lamb. The prayer for a clean heart goes up in regard to work and duty in this life, for God looks upon the heart so life must be sincere, true, and unselfish, and it is for eternal interest that the heart is clean, pure, and holy with all subordinate to the future immortal life. A pure heart and right spirit are gifts God gives, marked by thankfulness and peace, more valuable in God's sight than talent or wealth.

The prayer is to be prayed from sincere lips when the whole soul is diseased and the whole heart sick with selfishness, pride, self-valuation, stubborn will, covetousness, and long habits of indulgence showing in faultfinding, complaining, suspicion, irritability, and a sour temper that nothing satisfies. Knowledge alone cannot bring the needed change, but the transforming grace of Christ cleanses the defiled soul, subdues nerves and will to Christ instead of leaving them for Satan, and cures disorders of mind and body rooted in undisciplined disposition. Its answer produces true conversion in which old things pass away and all things become new, and the blind now see. It is offered in earnest seeking when hearts are melted and broken before Him, from a sense of too little spiritual strength and unfitness for the great work to be done, with earnest desire to do God's will. God meets it with comfort and blessing, deep humbling, and humbled resolve to be more careful of each other's feelings and always treat each other with respect and dignity and honor.

A clean heart and renewed, right spirit are gifts to seek from God through earnest, sincere prayer for reform of the inner life, and with this help evil besetments are kept under and God's grace appears in life. Purity of heart and life is necessary for God to work with a person, with truth woven into character. Mothers, youth, and children need this inward purity, which is more precious than gold and joined to Christ's righteousness, the only garment in which they can enter heaven. The pure in heart shall see God, and those clothed in Christ's righteousness will do duties in this life that glorify God, taught in the home alongside nature's beauties leading to nature's God. That prayer for a right spirit within is applied even to a child, asking God to shape dispositions and lead to salvation.
