Psalms 52:4

Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

The verse portrays a man who stands in selfish independence, refusing to make God his strength and instead placing his trust in himself. He relies on the abundance of his riches and grows strong not in righteousness but in wickedness. By this course he places himself on the side of Satan rather than taking his stand under the rule of Christ.

He gives himself to disorder and conflict, fostering anarchy and war and strife, and in the last great day he will be made to see how many souls were lost through his failure to stand right. To love devouring words is to possess a deceitful and destructive tongue that devises harm like a sharp razor working deceitfully. It is to prefer evil to good and falsehood and lying to righteous speech.

For this God will destroy him forever, seizing him and taking him away, tearing him from his dwelling place and uprooting him from the land of the living. The righteous will look upon his ruin with reverent fear and with laughter at his folly. He stands in utter contrast to the one who chooses God as guide, who trusts in divine mercy forever and ever and flourishes like a thriving green olive tree in the house of God, praising God forever and waiting on His name.
