Psalms 55:12

For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

The hurt in view is not that done by an open enemy but that done by trusted friends who have become hostile. An attack from an avowed foe could have been endured, and opposition from one who hated could have been evaded by withdrawing from reach. Betrayal by a familiar companion is different, bringing a special pain and great distress that open enmity does not produce. Those who inflict it had been close companions, sharing meals together and joining in worship before turning into enemies.
