Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
God calls burdened people to place every anxiety, trial, sorrow, responsibility and even sin upon Him instead of carrying it alone, trusting Him to give strength, peace and steadiness so the righteous will not fall. He weighs what He permits, gives power equal to the day, and never asks anyone to crush health and life by dragging tomorrow's load into today. To cast the burden is to leave it with Him after prayer rather than taking it back, looking to Him instead of to human sympathy, and giving up self-reliance while still faithfully doing the duty that can be done. The promise is to be held by faith even when feelings stay dark and discouragement presses, committing the whole helpless self to His keeping in earnest private prayer. Jesus Himself is the compassionate bearer who carries both the person and the load, understands every grief, supplies every need, and accomplishes what human strength cannot, bringing comfort, healing, courage and victory in daily trials.
Casting Burdens, Finding Sustenance
Cast every burden upon the Lord instead of carrying it alone, trusting Him to sustain all who entrust their loads to Him, great and small. Bring to Him every anxiety and trial to gain strength to endure and find a way through difficulty, for the more helpless the soul knows itself to be the stronger it becomes through His strength, and the heavier the burden the more blessed the rest in placing it on the Burden-bearer. Bring cares and perplexities to Him, for Christ is the great Burden-bearer, and pointing the afflicted in mind and heart to Him brings help; leaving trials and labor with the Savior keeps them from seeming hard and severe. Bring burdens to the compassionate Redeemer whose ear is always open to prayer and whose eye sees every sacrifice and sorrow, and neglect and injustice endured in this life will increase reward in the coming day.
Burden in the promise includes anxieties, cares, perplexities, trials, sorrows, sickness, responsibilities, work, weakness, pain, and even sin and remorse. Life's cares and burdens, the worries of poverty and the anxieties of wealth, are to be placed on the Lord who sustains those who trust Him, and when they are not entrusted to Him those cares can separate the soul from Him. Cares and burdens taken to God the Burden-bearer bring safety, freedom from constant fear and borrowed anxiety, for God cares for His children and provides sufficient grace in every time of need. Burdens including sin are to be placed on the Lord, who takes them, sustains the burdened person, and brings about what is good for His people and for the soul.
He shall sustain means He gives strength to endure trials and resist temptation, and carries both the person and the burdens to be borne so that the trusting soul can continue with courage rather than become depressed. He gives comfort, strength and hope to those who depend wholly on Him, and holding firmly to His hand brings safe guidance and abiding rest. Faith in His care brings help for troubled minds and supports healing of body and mind, and tender sympathy leading the sick-hearted and discouraged to the Burden-bearer brings healing to diseased minds and bodies. He keeps the righteous from falling or being moved, so that they gain victory and stand firm.
God weighs each burden before allowing it to rest on His workers and does not place on anyone more than can be borne, and Jesus will carry loads when trusted, doing what human strength cannot do. Worry cannot see what lies ahead, but Jesus knows the outcome and has a way to bring relief in every difficulty, and abiding in Him gives strength to do all things. He provides strength for each day according to the day, so His children need not bear tomorrow's burdens in advance but take burdens and sorrows to the Lord who sustains those who trust in Him, for Christ is near in trouble and ready to help carry what is given Him. He does not require His servants to sacrifice health or life by carrying burdens beyond strength or taking extra weights until crushed, but to leave the heavy load with the Lord and wait for Him rather than be crushed.
Casting the burden means leaving it with the Lord who sustains those who trust Him, rather than carrying it away and taking it back after prayer. It means placing the burden on God rather than on another person, for He hears prayer, knows what is needed, will supply every need, understands motives, listens patiently, gives fitting counsel, works through difficulties for good, and will manage what is entrusted to Him. Personal and business burdens are not to be laid on other people or on unreliable human sympathy and support, but upon the Lord with trust in His sustaining help, seeking ways to unload what is too heavy to carry alone.
Trusting God in Faith
Trust in the promise means laying the whole weight of trust on what God has said and resting wholly in Jesus and His promise never to leave or forsake His people in trial and temptation. Faith holds to what He has said even when feelings do not improve, when joy and consolation are absent, and when discouragement, doubt, impatience and restlessness press, resisting them rather than fostering grief and despondency until victory is gained. To lean the whole weight on Christ is to trust Him fully to hear prayer, to know what is needed, and to supply every need and give grace to sustain through weakness.
The verse calls for giving Jesus both the burdens and the self, entrusting the whole self and the helpless soul to Him and committing the soul to His keeping rather than trusting one's own heart. The helpless soul may be placed in His care and, as the person walks trustingly and takes God at His word, the Lord helps and sustains and does not leave that person to walk alone. Believers can cling to His promises amid conflict and painful doubts and fears, for God helps those who earnestly seek Him, and discouragement and doubts are to be brought to Him until victory is gained.
Laying burdens on the Lord means giving up self-reliance and self-exaltation, dependence on one's own judgment and heart, and trust in personal sufficiency, for Christ is the burden-bearer and the worker's strength. When self-exaltation and dependence on one's own judgment are laid aside, God can use the person as a channel of light.
Entrusting the burden to God does not excuse neglecting duty, for when there is a part to be acted it should be done, and trust is exercised while remaining faithful to duty and living for the better life. What can be done should be done, but what cannot be fixed and what is impossible to carry or accomplish should not be attempted in one's own strength but told to the Lord, who stays near and carries every load and gives peace, courage, strength and help. A burden may thus be placed in the Lord's hands while the duty is carried out in His love and fear.
The burden is laid on Christ, the great Burden-bearer, through repentance, humility and earnest prayer, with anguish, anxiety and responsibility brought to God in distress and God accepting sincere repentance and forgiving sins for Christ's sake. Anxious care is to be cast on Him in trust in private prayer in the closet, where He meets and sustains with strength according to the day, rather than carried as a constant load. It is not to be displayed so as to make religion appear unattractive, but casting it on Him frees believers to live before others a life of peace and joy, make home happy with courtesy, forbearance and love, rise above trials, look to blessings received, fix the mind on the mansions prepared for those that love Him, and diligently supply so far as possible the deficiency of those who refuse their duty.
Christ the Burden-Bearer
Jesus Christ is the great, compassionate Burden-bearer, near in trouble to all who bring every anxiety, care, perplexity and trial to Him. His ear is always open to prayer and His eye sees every sacrifice and sorrow, and neglect and injustice endured in this life will only increase reward in the coming day. The heavier the burden laid upon Him, the more blessed the rest found in Him, for the more helpless a person knows himself to be, the stronger he becomes through the Lord's strength to endure and find a way through difficulty. He carries both the person and the burdens to be borne, so that the burdened and discouraged who trust that He cares for them can go on with courage instead of becoming depressed. Pointing those afflicted in mind and heart to Him is itself a means of help, for tender sympathy can lead the sick-hearted and discouraged to the Burden-bearer, where faith in His care brings help to troubled minds and healing to diseased minds and bodies, and He sustains them and keeps the righteous from falling.
He invites the weary to confide in Him rather than carrying their burdens away to place them on another person or on unreliable human support. He understands motives, listens patiently, gives fitting counsel, knows grief and sorrow and what is needed, supplies every need, and works through difficulties for the good of those who trust Him. His assurance that He knows, helps and encourages the tried soul brings peace amid fear, perplexity and uncertainty, with the promise never to leave His people to their enemies. He remains with believers in the valley as well as on the mountaintop, and what has been committed to Him can be trusted to His keeping. Resting the whole weight of trust on what He has said means holding to His promise by faith even when feelings do not improve and discouragement presses.
What is entrusted to Him He manages, for He takes the burdens laid upon Him, sustains the burdened one, guides with His counsel through every trial, keeps the traveler firm in the right way, and brings about what is good for His people and for the soul. This includes even the burden of sin, which placed upon the Lord is taken by Him to the soul's good. He bears all the burdens of His people, and that bearing gives assurance and hope.
He does what human strength cannot do and accomplishes what human effort cannot, for when the load cannot be resolved by human power He can do everything. When a burden feels impossible, entrusting it to Him brings peace to the heart. He weighs each burden before allowing it to rest on His workers and does not place on anyone, nor ask of anyone, more than can be borne with His strength, and He does not forsake a soul that desires Him. Worry cannot see what lies ahead, but Jesus knows the outcome and has a way of relief in every difficulty, and abiding in Him gives strength to do all things.
Strength for Daily Trials
For those crushed by many responsibilities, business loads, committee difficulties, school burdens, and lack of help, the verse means not taking on extra weights until crushed but entrusting every load great and small to the Lord who carries burdens and cares for His workers. When needed help cannot be obtained, the burden is to be placed on the Lord and left with Him in trust that He is faithful and will not fail, even when how or when He will help is not seen. In committee perplexities the Lord is to carry the burden while His people wait for Him to resolve it, rather than continuing meetings into the night and imperiling health. In weakness He sustains those who trust Him, so that claiming His promises and depending on His strength enables continuance in work amid strain, illness and discouragement.
For young ministers the verse means casting the whole burden on the Lord instead of depending on any man to furnish discourses. It means looking constantly to God for guidance, help, knowledge, power and Spirit, searching the Scriptures and digging for truth as for hidden treasure, praying, believing and pleading for constant help, and when discouraged being driven to God for enlightenment. Those who feel no burden and will only take sermons from another man's pen and brains are not qualified and should wait until imbued with wisdom from on high. For Christian teachers and all in trials and labor, leaving cares and burdens with the Savior keeps them from seeming hard or severe.
For a mother overwhelmed by raising her children, the verse means bringing that burden to Christ in prayer and laying it at His feet, where in His presence she finds sustaining strength, cheerfulness, hope, courage and wisdom for trying hours, her burden made easier and rest given to her soul. Anxious care especially for unconverted husbands, children and loved ones out of Christ, with its sadness, tears and distress, is not to be carried as a constant load or displayed so as to make religion unattractive, but to be rolled upon Jesus the Burden-bearer in private prayer where He meets and sustains with strength according to the day. He died for those souls and bought them at infinite price, has claims upon their service, waits to bless and save them, and is grieved more deeply than loved ones can be by resistance to His claims and rejection of His mercy. Casting the burden on Him in trust frees believers to live before others a life of peace and joy, make home happy with courtesy, forbearance and love, rise above trials, look to blessings received, fix the mind on the mansions prepared for those that love Him, and diligently supply so far as possible the deficiency of those who refuse their duty.
For the sick-hearted, discouraged, bereaved, and those in pain, grief, severe affliction and physical trials, laying the burden on the Lord brings comfort, freedom, peace, joy, rest and relief and sustains through distress. Tender sympathy leads such to the Burden-bearer, and faith in His care brings help to troubled minds and healing to diseased minds and bodies. Resting wholly in Jesus in trial and temptation means relying on His help and His promise never to leave or forsake His people, and contemplating His love and sacrifice brings holy joy, calm, peace and love and gives reason to hold fast to faith. His assurance that He knows grief and sorrow and invites the burdened to rest their burdens in Jesus brings peace amid fear, perplexity and uncertainty, with promise not to leave them to their enemies, and after intense heartache from difficult duty or a terrible accident He gives rest and relief when the heavy burden is laid upon Him.
For those tried by the worries of poverty and the anxieties of wealth, the verse means seeking the Savior's help and comfort, for when burdens are not entrusted to Him those cares can separate from Him. All difficulties and burdens in service, with trials and temptations to be met, are to be taken to the Lord in prayer asking His help, and those who do this will surely gain victory and never be moved away from Him and His purpose, as Noah ridiculed and scorned and made a laughing-stock was yet not moved from his purpose. Christ helps the believer endure painful trials including the bruises of suspicion and jealousy and gives hope of deliverance. Depending on God gives wisdom to keep silent and grace to bear wrongs that would otherwise crush, letting the truth's transforming power show in the life. Burdens from opposition, scorn, misjudgment of motives and character, distressing treatment and hurtful words are to be entrusted to God alone, to Christ the Sin Bearer and Burden Bearer, relying on Him through the struggle to choose a better way and restraining impulsive feelings so that hurtful words need not overcome but peace and victory are found through Jesus.
The promise holds in weakness, helplessness and the limit of strength, in strain, illness, emergencies, oppressive circumstances and painful trials where truth must be testified. Casting a burden on the Lord means entrusting to Him what cannot be carried or managed alone, and God gives strength and preserves. Heavy responsibilities are to be laid upon the Redeemer, who is the strength and help needed in every emergency and who sustains His child in great need without fail. Cares and burdens taken to God the Burden-bearer bring safety, freedom from constant fear and borrowed anxiety, sufficient grace in every time of need, and courage amid suffering and uncertainty while looking ahead in faith to serving others. Troubles should drive to God, who enables bearing hardship with a Christian spirit, preserves, encourages, and gives strength to continue work and serve others with courage.
