Psalms 55:3
Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
The psalm sets human wickedness under deserved divine retribution, laying bare the Lord's just anger against sin and at the same time His mercy and loving-kindness. Prophetically it is the record of Christ's life-and-death struggle with the enemy, in which He endured the voice of enemies, the oppression of the wicked, iniquity cast upon Him, and hatred turned against Him in wrath. As man's substitute He took human weaknesses, infirmities and sins so completely as to identify Himself with man in all failings and sufferings, even to Jacob's sins.
That humiliation brought Him very low as a worm and lay with heavy weight upon Him as the human Son of God, and in that lowness is seen the greatness of His sacrifice. Under the weight He poured out His soul in agony seeking God's help while pleading God's promises. By thus opening His suffering and inner experience, the verse makes plain why He is able to help those who are tempted.
