David Longs for the Wings of a Doveby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 55:6

And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

The cry is the sorrowful desire of one exhausted, overwrought, and discouraged by present distress to escape and find rest, whose only wish left is to get away and be at rest. It gives words to the longing to leave the dreary, lonely, weary, and sorrowful life of this earth and be at rest in the better, heavenly land. The wish for wings like a dove to fly away is applied to the loneliness and dreariness of earthly life and to the desire to be free of its pain and weariness.

That yearning is a homesick longing awakened after seeing in vision the better land and its glories. The promised rest and joy of that land make the one who has seen it long to be free of this dark present world and to return there. Even while longing to leave, the speaker had been told to return to earth and tell others what had been revealed.
