Psalms 56:12

Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

Vows resting upon the speaker carry a binding obligation that must be met, not left as mere words. That obligation is discharged by rendering thank-offerings and praises to God in return for what He has done. Such gratitude is inseparable from trust in God, for the one who vows relies on Him rather than on human help. It is also tied to deliverance from danger, with thanksgiving offered because God has rescued and preserved life.
