Psalms 56:5

Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

In its original setting the verse describes David's opponents twisting his words every day and directing all their thoughts against him for evil. They distorted what he said day after day with hostile intent toward him. Prophetically it describes Christ having his words repeatedly distorted and misunderstood.

His saying about destroying the temple and rebuilding it in three days was seized upon and distorted by his enemies. His parables were not understood, and even his own disciples failed to comprehend him. Under severe temptation even John the Baptist questioned whether Jesus was the one to come.

The verse also describes what the apostles suffered when false teachings were attributed to them. Because of that slander honest people regarded Christians as wicked and would not hear or investigate the truth. In the same way it applies to slanderous falsehoods spread against God's people.
