Psalms 57:6

They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.

Psalm 57 was composed while David was a fugitive from Saul and had taken refuge in the cave of Adullam. His family joined him there in his exile and danger. The unity and affection that replaced earlier discord among them brought joy to David even in those circumstances.

The verse pictures enemies preparing a net to catch the speaker's steps and digging a pit in his path ahead of him. Their schemes turn back upon themselves, for they fall into the very midst of the pit they made. This was illustrated when the priests set traps for Jesus in the temple and His wisdom enabled Him to escape them. Their plans failed, and their failure only added to their hatred of Him.
