My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
The psalm was composed in the cave of Adullam among the mountains of Judah while seeking refuge from the pursuit of Saul. His brethren and all his father's house had come down to him there because they believed God had chosen him as the future ruler. They felt safer with him as a fugitive than exposed to a jealous king. At that time the family was united in sympathy and affection, and discord had given place to harmony.
To have the heart fixed in this sense is to have it fixed in trusting in God and waiting for God to open the way. It dares not move forward without assurance that God would have one go, as in traveling east to camp meetings. Yet it remains perfectly willing to go if light shines that way. This is trusting that the Lord knows what is best for oneself, for family, and for the cause of God. It means doing one's own work as God leads while allowing others to do their work as God leads them without getting in each other's way.
The same fixedness keeps the heart fixed on the Saviour in poor health and weakness. This includes influenza, troubled eyes, and pain at the base of the brain. It includes sleeping little for many nights and rising early in the morning. Even then there is no complaining, because the Lord sustains remarkably even when one is unable to write as desired.
