Psalms 6:4

Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.

The verse is a cry for God to turn back toward the sufferer and rescue the inner life from peril. It asks for deliverance and salvation not on the ground of human worthiness but for the sake of divine mercy. The sinner pleads to be spared because God is merciful, making mercy itself the reason for the appeal. That plea belongs especially to times when personal wrongdoing has weighed down God's people and emboldened their enemies to triumph over them.
