David Climbs Toward the High Rockby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 61:2

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

From even the farthest place, the one whose heart is weighed down by trouble, pain, weakness and perplexity is to cry earnestly to God for help and refuge. That cry is a plea to be led to a strength and shelter higher than oneself and beyond one's own power. The higher rock is Christ, God and Jesus, the rock of salvation, refuge and everlasting strength. His atoning sacrifice, justifying and sanctifying righteousness, and sustaining presence are enough to uphold the sin-burdened, wounded and empty in the hardest trials. Coming to Him gives peace, rest, healing, courage and fullness, lifting the sufferer above pain and enabling perseverance through repeated trials and defeats.

Cry When Overwhelmed

From the end of the earth, even from the farthest place, the one whose heart is overwhelmed may cry out to God to be led to the rock that is higher than self, a place of strength and refuge beyond one's own.

When the heart is overwhelmed by trouble, distress, pain, cares, trials, discouragement, perplexity and weakness, the verse calls for earnest crying to God for help, guidance and refuge. That crying belongs even amid illness, heavy burdens and the prospect of death, when distress and pain feel unbearable and discouragement seems to surge like a torrent. It is a plea to be saved and guided when one's own strength is not enough, to be led to a refuge and strength found beyond the self.

The cry is a plea to be led to a refuge, strength and care greater than the self and beyond one's own power. It asks God to lead the overwhelmed one to a place of safety and to a refuge greater and stronger than self. Rather than trusting one's own strength, the overwhelmed person is to turn to God and cling to the higher Rock, for God hears prayer and is a present help in every time of need. Clinging to Him brings courage and enables perseverance through repeated trials and defeats.

Trusting this higher guidance leaves the heart without misgivings. People see only a little way ahead and are prone to error, while God sees the end from the beginning, knows what they need, and can order what is best.

Christ the Higher Rock

The rock higher than the speaker is Christ, who is God and Jesus himself, the rock of salvation and refuge, the stronghold of his people, and everlasting strength. He is the secure source of help and strength to whom the overwhelmed can turn, the one to cry to for guidance and refuge when the heart is overwhelmed and weak. To cling to him as that higher Rock brings trust and courage and support, even amid illness, heavy burdens, discouragement surging like a torrent, and the prospect of death.

As the sure foundation and the tried Foundation Stone, he can bear the weight of sin and sustain all who bring him their trials, sorrows, wounds, weakness and emptiness. His atoning blood and atoning sacrifice, his merits, his justifying and sanctifying righteousness, his fullness and his sustaining presence are sufficient to give comfort, assurance, support and strength in the hardest trials, when distress and pain feel unbearable. Coming to him brings peace, rest, healing, strength and fullness, and lifts the believer above pain. His wounded side is a place of safety, and holding fast to him enables perseverance through repeated trials and defeats, while clinging to him gives courage amid illness and burdens, and his might as the Rock above enables conquest.

He is to be chosen as Guide and Counsellor, looked to for guidance and counsel in trials, and trusted as sun, shield, life and wisdom, with salvation coming through his righteousness. In him as a place of safety, divine grace enables forgiveness, kindness and love to overcome injury and provocation when trouble overwhelms. Looking to Christ rather than dwelling on one's own sinful, imperfect self keeps the soul from being shaped by that self and turns it toward the Saviour and the divine likeness. Leaning upon him as the only Saviour is shown by a life changed and made holy through the truth. The Jewish nation should have trusted him by faith and witnessed that he was their Rock and everlasting strength, and then Jerusalem would not have been destroyed.
