Psalms 62:9

Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

Men of low station are empty and fleeting, and men of high station are false and disappointing when trusted. Laid together in the balance they are altogether lighter than vanity, without substance, reliability, or lasting weight and worth. Neither social standing nor human power gives enduring value, so neither rank is a sure ground of trust. God places all in His just balance, weighing every action, motive, purpose and character against His perfect law rather than by outward position, so king and beggar stand alike before Him and destiny is decided by deeds. Human worth and influence are therefore measured by His balances and not by rank, intellect or eloquence, and lives given to superficial entertainment and words spoken with guile and without truthfulness, purity and unselfish purpose are found lighter than vanity.

Human Rank Proved Vanity

Men of low degree are emptiness, and men of high degree are falsehood when set in God's measure. Every social rank stands weightless and untrustworthy under that measuring, the low as vanity and the high as a lie.

Laid in the balance together, low and high alike are altogether lighter than vanity itself. They are insubstantial and unreliable, weightless and insignificant, with no lasting weight or worth of their own. Human standing does not make a person weighty, for low rank and high rank together still come out wanting.

Neither social standing nor human power gives lasting worth or reliability. Neither is therefore a sure ground of trust when measured against what truly matters and endures. This is the important lesson of the verse about human status and worth.

God Weighs Character Justly

The verse places all people under weighing in God's balance, where He weighs persons themselves and weighs every action and deed. Low in rank or high, they are insubstantial and unreliable when so weighed, and together they are lighter than vanity, found wanting with no lasting weight or worth. Human standing does not make a person weighty before Him, and human status does not allow character to escape His judgment.

He reads every purpose and thought while He weighs, weighing motives, purposes, character, conduct and deeds. That weighing judges motives, purposes and character against His perfect law, rather than by outward position or apparent character. Human standing and apparent character cannot withstand His assessment of motives and deeds.

Even king and beggar are alike before Him, for He knows hidden and dishonest thoughts and weighs every action. Deeds determine destiny. This weighing reaches the conduct of people in positions of responsibility, and those whose deeds obstruct the work of salvation are found wanting.

Warnings for Daily Living

The life and character of those who profess reverence for sacred things yet turn their minds to superficial, unreal and fictitious entertainment are pronounced lighter than vanity. Such turning reveals human life and character to be weightless and empty before God when weighed in His balance. Studying instead the Lord's greatness, mercies, works in nature, majesty and power as revealed in Scripture brings blessing and strength.

Human worth and influence are measured by God's balances, not by social standing, sharp intellect, eloquence or impressive speech. Words spoken with guile, or without truthfulness, steadfast purpose, purity and unselfishness, are weighed as lighter than vanity. Sincere, faithful speech grounded in humble trust is precious to God.
