Psalms 63:5

My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

David composed this song in his manhood while a hunted fugitive taking refuge in the rocks and caves of the wilderness. It was sung in communion with heaven in a dry and weary land where there is no water. There he voiced thirsting and longing for God, satisfaction of soul in Him as with marrow and fatness, and praise to Him with joyful lips. He rejoiced in the shadow of His wings because He had been a help.

The soul is deeply satisfied in God as richly as with marrow and fatness, like a rich feast of nourishing, abundant food. This fulfillment prompts praise to Him with joyful lips as the response of a heart fulfilled in God. Even amid severe illness and pain, remembering and meditating on God brings comfort and blessing and gives reason to praise Him.

The image of marrow and fatness denotes the rich nourishment and satisfaction found in God's Word. Both the Old and New Testament Scriptures contain this spiritual fullness. Those who seek the Lord wholeheartedly with all their heart will find Him. Christ's instructions fill and strengthen those who receive them with a true heart and full assurance of faith.

The directions given to Israel in the Old Testament are spiritually nourishing and satisfy the soul like rich food. Those who receive and live by them need not remain spiritually hungry. In ministry, labor should express this spiritual abundance and vitality by being rich with the life and power of God's Spirit, not limited to stale, repeated teaching. Receiving fresh instruction from God brings light, love, grace, and joy.
