Psalms 69:28

Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

The book of the living is the book of records in heaven in which every name is inscribed. In it the acts of all are faithfully written, both their sins and their obedience. To be blotted out of that book and not written with the righteous is to have one's name erased from it. Only those who have sinned against God are blotted out, for the righteous shall not suffer for the guilt of the sinner.

Blotting out takes place when sins against God become too grievous for pardon. Whoever has sinned against Him is liable to be blotted out of His book. When the name is erased the person is no more remembered by Him for good. Such are devoted to destruction and left to the fullness of His wrath.

Willingness to be blotted out with the guilty rather than see wrath fall upon them manifests great love. That willingness illustrates the love of Christ and His mediation for the sinful race. Church members who are not walking in the light of God's Word run a great risk of having their names blotted out of the book of life.
