Psalms 7:17

I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.

The verse belongs to the first book of the Psalms, Psalms 1 to 41, which is the first of the five books of the Hebrew Psalter, and it stands within the Psalms 1 to 11 group that meets every phase of human experience and within the Psalms 1 to 17 written by David. It is not David's song alone but an inspired song God gave to His children, part of the treasure-house of the Psalms, proper to sing and study at all times. It was given to impress the spiritual truths of God's Fatherhood and goodness seen in the books of Moses and Job, to be learned by experience so as to keep from the paths of the destroyer.

It is the prayer and assurance of David as a tried soul, following the pattern of many Psalms that begin with a sense of great need and end with triumph and confidence in God. Its words call for praise according to the Lord's righteousness and singing praise to the name of the Lord Most High, joined with trust in God because He is good, His mercy endures forever, and He is a present help in time of need. It shows help in discouragement, strength in trial, and solid comfort in grief, warns against sin and transgression, and points to a God who is able and willing and anxious to save. In connection with escaping the snare, it points to freedom in which there is no condemnation and sin no longer rules, because Christ is Master.
