Psalms 7:5

Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.

In this verse soul means the living person himself, not something other than the man who speaks. That soul can be pursued and persecuted, hunted and taken and captured, just as a person can be captured. It is therefore not necessarily a separate independently existing part of a person. Nor is it a conscious spirit existing apart from the body. All the attributes of the body belong in common to the soul, for man is intrinsically and properly one individual, not compound or separable and not made of two distinct natures of soul and body, but the whole man is soul, a bodily individual substance that is animated, sensitive and rational.

This pursuit of the soul belongs to a setting in which liberty to captives and opening of the prison to the bound becomes an actual experience after confession of sin to God and confession of faults to those wronged. Then the soul escapes like a bird out of a broken snare, because the snare is broken. The sinner is left as free as if he had not sinned. There is no condemnation and sin has no dominion, for Christ as Master brings liberty, life and peace.
