Psalms 7:9

Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.

The righteous God tries the hearts and reins, searching and testing the inner motives of people. In that searching He knows every detail of each soul's experience. His examination falls especially upon those who have received light and knowledge and are engaged in sacred work. From them He accepts nothing less than full devotion to the work and wholehearted consecration to Himself.

Sincerity and uprightness of heart, joined with fervent prayer, are essential to acceptance with God. Those whom He accepts worship in spirit and in truth and in holiness. Workers should therefore do their duties faithfully as in God's presence, not merely when watched by human eyes nor only well enough to earn their wages.

The verse expresses hope and yearning that the wickedness of the wicked will come to an end. It also expresses hope that the just will be established. That end of wickedness is soon. That end means the great apostasy and rebellion being brought to an end.

The plea against evil is joined to self-reproach, in that the faithful feel they have not used all their ability in Christ's service and that failure to resist evil has given Satan's forces greater power to prevail. The hope looks forward to reaching Canaan, the beautiful home where the Lord will be Father to His children and His people will live as His children.
