Psalms 71:5

For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.

The Lord God Himself is the speaker's hope and the one in whom he has placed trust since youth. The speaker is Hezekiah, whose lifelong reliance on God upheld him when he was brought face to face with death. The psalm around this confession portrays God as the one who has sustained the speaker, and it carries his plea not to be forsaken when strength fails so that he may still declare God's power to coming generations.

Apart from God human beings are without hope, and therefore they are to fix their faith upon Him. Hope and confidence belong in God rather than in human wisdom or human strength. The verse is a personal confession of dependence on God made when seeking His guidance. It calls students to depend on God instead of human advice or their own judgment, and to seek His counsel and direction in their decisions.
