Psalms 72:19

And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

The verse is the closing praise after the picture of a righteous king whose just rule brings peace and justice, deliverance for the poor, and blessing among all nations, drawing all nations to honor him. It blesses God's glorious name forever as everlasting, honoring the God of Israel who alone does wondrous things. His glory is His character of mercy, kindness, and tender love, to be revealed to all mankind and declared among the heathen.

The prayer that the whole earth be filled with His glory declares God's plan that His unlimited invitation of mercy go to every place. It presents God on His throne giving audience to the world, calling all the ends of the earth to look to Him and be saved, with His house a house of prayer for all people and all people praising Him. The verse was a prophecy Solomon's reign could have fulfilled if he had followed God's instruction. For a time he heeded David's counsel and brought glory to Israel's God, but his later pride, alliances with heathen nations, and idolatry marred that course.

It points to the worldwide revelation of God through the gospel and is rapidly meeting fulfillment through missionary work, with the gospel message proclaimed to every part of the world and soon to all nations. People from every nation, kindred, tongue, and people are convicted and converted, made accepted in Christ to the praise of the glory of His grace, bowing in humility before the true and living God exalted as Ruler in unreserved consecration, and God's grace is displayed through them. Their universal praise is how the earth becomes full of His glory. Applied to believers and the church's work of carrying light to those in darkness, the verse is the prayer, proclamation, and response of converted people who are changed day by day to be like Christ in character. When spoken by those filled with obedience, love, and earnest desire to bring sinners to Christ, it brings blessing and gladness and exerts a saving influence backed by heaven's sympathy and cooperation. Through faithful service a multitude from every part of the earth will become God's children fitted for everlasting glory, with praise, prayer, and thanksgiving rising to God.
