Psalms 72:4
He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor. He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
The verse pictures a righteous king who judges the poor fairly, saves the children of the needy, and breaks the oppressor in pieces. Those three actions — fair judgment for the poor, rescue and deliverance for the needy, and opposition to and destruction of the oppressor — are the marks of a just reign of righteousness. It sets forth the kind of rule Solomon could have exercised had he followed God's instruction and wise counsel.
For a time Solomon did follow wise counsel and by such a course brought glory to God, so that his history could have accorded with this prophecy. But later pride, political ambition, and idolatry led him away from the ideal, so his history did not continue to accord with it.
The verse is one of the glorious promises made to David and his house that look forward to the eternal ages and find complete fulfillment in Christ the Messiah. As so fulfilled, it means Christ uses His mighty power in judgment to defend the poor, bring deliverance to the needy, and crush the power of their oppressors for the protection of the vulnerable.
