They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
The verse is part of an inspired prophecy picturing a righteous king's reign. That reign means worldwide dominion from sea to sea, with service and honor from all nations, so that even those in remote wilderness regions bow before the king and his enemies are brought completely low in submission in the dust. It describes the reign of righteousness Solomon could have had if he had known God, served Him with a perfect heart, kept His statutes, commandments and judgments, and ruled justly in the fear of God, which obedient reign would have exalted Israel at the head of the nations. Solomon's whole history might have reflected this ideal, but his later pride, political alliances, and idolatry meant his reign did not remain in keeping with it.
David's testimony in the verse leads the church's intercession for the salvation of souls to the ends of the earth. It is part of the accumulated treasures of Old Testament history bound together with new and increased present light for this last generation, repeating with force in the church in these last days. Those given this rich inheritance ought to show increased faith in exercise, energy and earnestness, and dependence on God for power to replenish the world and send the light of the Sun of Righteousness to its ends.
