Psalms 73:24

Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

God himself in Christ leads his people by his counsel through the pilgrimage of this life and afterward brings them into glory. It belongs with being continually with him as he holds the believer by the right hand, with wanting no one in heaven but him and nothing on earth beside him, with taking him as strength of heart and portion forever when flesh and heart fail, and with drawing near to him in full trust to tell of all his works. His guiding counsel comes through his Holy Spirit, his providences and the teachings of his Word, and is found by seeking him earnestly in prayer, searching the Scriptures diligently, trusting his promises and doing his will rather than following human ideas or personal wisdom. Those who claim the promise are true believing and trusting children who look to Jesus in simple, unfeigned faith, give him first place, keep themselves unspotted from the world, and follow him in self-denial and cross-bearing. Following his example, life and spirit as the standard of perfection is the safe course, so the guided life becomes one of praise and joyful song on the way, walking in his footsteps in the light in full surrender to God.

Guided by Counsel to Glory

God himself, in Christ, guides his people by his counsel through the pilgrimage of this life and afterward receives them to glory. He himself is the Leader of his people, and if they look to him he guides them to success in life. This is the individual experience of his true, believing, trusting children.

In its setting the promise belongs with being continually with God because he holds the believer by the right hand. It belongs with desiring none in heaven but God and none on earth beside him, making him the supreme desire in heaven and on earth. When flesh and heart fail, God is the strength of the heart and the portion forever. It is good to draw near to God, to put all trust in the Lord God, and to declare all his works. It expresses trusting confidence in his loving care throughout life.

The verse is the language of true, believing, trusting children of God, of every trembling soul, and of those striving to overcome. They are not novices but learners, plucking the leaves of the tree of life for the healing of the nations. They hold fast their integrity, keep themselves unspotted from the world, and follow Jesus in faith, self-denial, and bearing the cross. They give Christ the first place in the heart and make him the man of counsel, looking unto Jesus in true simplicity with unfeigned faith, unbending uprightness and lofty integrity. They cultivate the pure principles of heaven and honor Christ as Redeemer.

The assurance gives reason for praise and joyful song throughout life's pilgrimage rather than complaint. It is the language of hearts that review God's great mercy, unfailing love, power in deliverance, goodness, and loving faithfulness as the true, tender, compassionate Shepherd from whose hand none shall be plucked. Their language is not selfish murmuring and repining over dark chapters but clear, flowing praise like clear flowing streams, with awakening spiritual songs. They dwell in the house of the Lord forever and return to simplicity, fervor, and first love.

Being guided by God's counsel in this life leads afterward to the overcomer's reward and the eternal inheritance secured by Christ's life.

Following Christ's Guidance Daily

Following Christ's example is the safe course for those who would be guided by his counsel and afterward received to glory. To follow him is to take his life and spirit as the standard of excellence and perfection, to walk in his footsteps and surrender fully to God. That walk is a walk in the light, in self-sacrifice rather than clinging to love of the world and earthly things. It requires diligence and willingness to suffer.

God gives his Spirit to those who strive, live and believe for it, enabling them to walk in the light and share his love and fullness. To those who remain faithful, walk humbly and look to him, his presence brings knowledge, wisdom, comfort, peace, hope and success. His guidance leads into the light as the trusting hold fast his promises and receive his sustaining care.

His leading by counsel comes through his Holy Spirit, his providences and the teachings of his Word, working together to instruct in the way of the Lord. It is found by trusting him, going to him in prayer when discouraged and disappointed, seeking him earnestly in prayer, diligently searching Scripture, and doing his will. Those who trust this divine guidance rather than human ideas or their own understanding, which is foolishness, are led in the right way. He is a very present help in time of need who makes his goodness pass before the trusting one, who never leaves nor forsakes, so believers can say with humble yet firm confidence that this God is their God forever and ever.

He is to be taken as guide from youth even unto death and acknowledged in all ways. Looking to him brings light, right direction, success, and safety for this life and the life to come. Dependence on his support is essential when the way is narrow and dangerous, like travelers who hang their weight on cords from above and declare their help comes from above. His counsel with wisdom and sound judgment is for those who want to do just what is right in practical work, including the selling of books and whether or not to secure property for school work, and this guidance is to be desired and prayed for.
