Psalms 74:11

Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.

Psalm 74 belongs to a group of post-Davidic psalms associated with the Babylonian captivity, reflecting the sorrow and desolation of the captives, their longing, and their prayer for deliverance. In that setting the question about the withdrawn hand is a plea for God to stop holding back His power and to intervene to deliver His people.

The intervention asked for is action against the enemy. What provokes the cry is the enemy's reproach and blasphemy. The withdrawn hand pictures God's apparent inaction, and asking Him to bring His right hand out of His bosom pleads for Him to act.

The absence of prophetic vision is portrayed as God's hand withdrawn, so that the loss of the prophetic gift is equivalent to the withdrawal of God's right hand. The verse thus expresses Israel's distress after the prophetic voice had been withdrawn because the people would not heed its calls to reform.
