For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
Psalm 74 belongs among the post-Davidic psalms linked to the Babylonian captivity, giving voice to the captives' sorrow and desolation and to their longing and prayers for deliverance. The verse declares God to be King from ancient times, the eternal King. It declares that He works salvation in the midst of the earth, that is, throughout the earth. It expresses confidence in God as the sovereign who acts to save.
His work is the saving of the lost. His gospel is a message of love and salvation for all nations and peoples. The verse applies to people in foreign mission fields who are turning from heathenism and rejoicing in the saving power of the third angel's message. It includes India in God's worldwide saving work, joining the need for more workers there to confidence in that saving work. Believers can join this work by dedicating their talents, lives, time, and means, and even those who cannot travel or preach publicly can still labor, pray, and give to support gospel work.
