Psalms 74:17

Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.

Psalm 74 belongs to the time after David, presumably to Asaph in the Babylonian captivity. It belongs to the period when Jerusalem had been brought low and its people were scattered. In that sorrow and desolation the captives expressed their longing and their prayers for deliverance. The psalm is filled with inspiring thoughts of God's mercy and power to save.

The verse declares that God fixed all the boundaries of the earth and formed summer and winter. He is the life and light of the whole wondrous world, and all things fair and bright are His. Wherever one turns His glories shine, and the brightness of day and the smiles of night are reflections caught from Him. His hand is seen in the farewell beam of day lingering among the opening clouds of evening and in the soft radiant hues marking the sun's decline as golden vistas into heaven. It is seen in the starry gloom of night overshadowing earth and skies, in youthful spring made to breathe by His Spirit, and in every flower wreathed by summer born beneath His kindling eye.
