Psalms 74:2
Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt. Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
The psalm containing this plea is post-Davidic and belongs to the captivity of the Jews in Babylon. It gives voice to the captives’ sorrow and desolation, to their longing, and to their prayers for deliverance. It is especially applicable to the time of the captivity when Jerusalem was brought low and its people were scattered. The dwelling place it names is the sanctuary built by the people of Israel, first connected with the tabernacle and afterward with the temple on Mount Moriah. That sanctuary was destroyed by fire and burned to the ground.
