Psalms 76:2

In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.

Salem is Jerusalem, that is Zion in Jerusalem. The tabernacle and dwelling place are the temple, God's holy house among Israel. In setting His dwelling there He showed His presence with His people and His favor to Israel.

The verse belongs to Jerusalem's deliverance from the Assyrian army and celebrates God's protection of the city. There He made Himself known and honored in Judah and Israel. There He vindicated His honor before the surrounding nations by prevailing over the proud Assyrian and breaking the arrows of the bow, the shield, the sword, and the battle.

He answered the earnest entreaties of His people in Jerusalem, mingled with confession of sin and many tears and whole trust in His power to save, and did not fail them. He filled their hearts with holy joy and the temple courts with songs of solemn praise.

Christ's presence in the second temple fulfilled its greater glory, and when He departed after Israel rejected Him, the temple's glory departed as well. God does not dwell in temples made with hands, yet He honors the assemblies of His people with His presence when they gather to seek Him, confess their sins, and pray for one another. Their gathering is of no avail unless they worship in spirit and truth and in holiness.
