Watchman on Jerusalem Wall Over the Silent Assyrian Campby emmanuel_higgins

Psalms 76:3

There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.

The breaking of the weapons took place in Salem, which is Jerusalem, God's tabernacle and dwelling place in Zion. It means that God Himself shattered the Assyrian weapons of war, the arrows of the bow, the shield and the sword, and ended the battle in prevailing over the proud Assyrian. The fulfillment came that very night when God sent the angel of the Lord to destroy the army of Sennacherib in the camp of the Assyrians. The angel slew 185,000 men, including all the mighty men of valor and the leaders and captains.

Afterward Sennacherib hastened back to his own land in shame and fear. By this deliverance God vindicated the honor of Jehovah before the surrounding nations. The deliverance was the answer to earnest entreaties mingled with confession of sin and tears, offered in whole trust in God's power to save in great need. The verse belongs to the solemn song of praise sung in the temple courts by a people filled with holy joy because God had answered them and had not failed them.
