Psalms 77:8

Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?

The cry is raised in fear that mercy has clean gone forever and that the promise has failed for evermore, that favor and grace have ceased to be shown and tender mercies have been shut up. It gives voice to the sorrow and anguish of those under trial, for whom hardship makes divine faithfulness look doubtful. Yet such questioning does not prove that graciousness and compassion have come to an end. Clinging to the Lord and resting in the Saviour brings peace and joy, because He will not fail.

The answer to the fear is found in looking to Jesus, in whom truth and loving-kindness and compassion shine forth. His living work as humanity's representative and Advocate secures the promise. God will not break His oath, will not falsify His word, and will not change what He has spoken.
