Psalms 78:12

Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

Marvellous things were done openly in the sight of the fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field or region of Zoan. The verse belongs to the psalm's recounting of the rich blessings bestowed on the people set against their poor return and response to all that had been done for them. That same account includes the later mighty acts of dividing the Red Sea, leading Israel by cloud and fire, and bringing water from the rocks in the wilderness.

Israel constantly worked against the good God who did these works, and by disobedience brought themselves into the condition that was the sure result of their own course, repenting under rebuke and chastisement but falling again under temptation through self-indulgence and self-gratification. Though these works were to be remembered, Israel forgot God and rebelled, longing for Egypt's comforts when they were withheld in the wilderness to test whether they valued His service and the freedom He had miraculously given them more than their former pleasures. The children of Israel complained when trials came and forgot the source of their strength, despite the marvellous things done for them.

These past acts show that God has power to strengthen and help His people again. In contrast to Israel, those who have Bible religion, with Christ abiding in them and them in Him, keep advancing in the divine life and become sanctified through fully receiving heavenly truth, and they do not complain and forget God in trial.
