Psalms 78:3

Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

God's people have heard and known His teachings, instruction, works, and accounts of His works because their fathers and earlier generations told them. This received knowledge is to be passed on to children and to the next and future generations. Parents have a binding duty to instruct their children in God's law and deeds. The purpose of passing it on is so future generations may know God's mighty works, trust in Him, remember them, and keep His commandments.

The record introduced by the verse shows that the children of Israel worked constantly against a good God, that through disobedience they were brought into the state that was the sure result of their own course, and that they repented under rebuke and chastisement but fell again under temptation, self-indulgence, and self-gratification. The psalm tells of the rich blessings God bestowed upon His people and of their poor returns for all His benefits. It was written for admonition upon those on whom the ends of the world have come, and it contains instructive lessons given in reproof, in warning, in encouragement, and in rich promises.

It calls for earnest study of the truths passed down through God's Word so that God's people may understand eternal realities, and it should be an object of study in schools and be timely spiritual food to the youth. It calls God's people to dwell on the simplicity of the faith and to teach others the saving truth for this time, looking to Christ for guidance and being taught of God whose Word was made flesh full of grace and truth. It urges advance in understanding eternal realities because a solemn work lies ahead, with the power of the gospel resting on those raised up to bear witness to the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. It makes every believer a fisher of men with the duty to explain the truths of the Word to those who do not know them through earnest, self-sacrificing effort for those perishing in sin, promising that those who sow the seeds of truth will reap a rich harvest whose good no human mind can estimate.
