Psalms 78:53

And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

Psalm 78:53 stands within a psalm that recounts the rich blessings God bestowed upon His people. Its setting is the record of those benefits placed alongside the people's poor return for them. The psalm as a whole holds together divine generosity and human failure to respond in kind.

The verse belongs to Israel's history of God's watchful care met with repeated unfaithfulness. Although God led them on safely, they worked against Him through disobedience. When rebuked and chastised they repented, yet afterward they fell again into temptation and self-indulgence.
