Psalms 78:59

When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

The verse belongs to a psalm that recounts the rich blessings God bestowed on Israel and the poor response and return the people made for all His benefits. His anger was provoked because Israel constantly worked against a good God by a disobedient course, repeatedly testing Him and breaking faith with Him. Their pattern was to repent under rebuke and chastisement and then fall again when faced with temptation, self-indulgence, and self-gratification. His wrath and great abhorrence, meaning His rejection of Israel, was the sure result brought on by the people's own unfaithfulness. That rejection was shown concretely when He abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh and gave His people over to their enemies in battle. The psalm teaches that God's people should remember and heed His word rather than forget Him.
