Psalms 78:63

The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

Psalm 78 recounts the rich blessings God bestowed upon His people Israel. It sets those benefits alongside the poor return the people made for them. The record of the fire consuming their young men and their maidens left without marriage shows the children of Israel constantly working against a good God.

That destruction was the sure result of their own disobedient course of action. It came as part of a rebuke and chastisement under which they repented for a time. Yet when temptation came again they fell, yielding to self-indulgence and self-gratification.
