Psalms 79:6

Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.

Psalm 79 is a post-Davidic psalm connected with the Babylonian captivity. It belongs with a group of psalms associated with the Jews' captivity in Babylon. That group expresses the captives' sorrow and desolation, their longing, and their prayers for deliverance. It applies to the time when Jerusalem had been brought low and its people were scattered in captivity, and is especially applicable to that captivity experience.

The heathen upon whom wrath is invoked are those who have not known God because they do not worship their Maker but worship gods of their own invention. They are distinct from those who may bear the Lord's name yet are called heathen because they follow heathen doctrines. The verse warns that God will pour out His fury upon those who do not call upon His name. That warning applies against neglecting prayer, including prayer with and for one's family.
