Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
God gave Adam, the first human pair, and humanity as a whole dominion over the earth and over the works of His hands, putting all things under their feet as His representatives and rightful rulers. That rule extends over the lower orders of creation, over every living thing, including animals on land, birds in the air, creatures in the sea, and the lower creatures. Those creatures cannot understand or acknowledge God's sovereignty, but they were made capable of loving and serving humanity.
Humanity was fitted for this rule by being made in the divine image with intelligence beyond that of other creatures, enabling people to contemplate and appreciate God's works in nature, and Adam was crowned as king and sovereign in Eden. The link connecting man is from above in the Highest Model, the likeness of God, and not from beneath in the likeness of any beast, so no missing link between beast and man needs to be searched for in nature. While humanity remained loyal to God, nature acknowledged this rule, but through transgression and sin Adam and the first pair forfeited the dominion, and rebellion spread through the animal creation.
The language of putting all things under his feet is applied in Hebrews to Jesus, to whom God has subjected everything, though not all things are yet seen to be under His rule. In its fullest sense the pattern of being crowned with glory and honor belongs to the Son of Man, in whom God became one with humanity, so that through Christ humanity is brought into oneness with the Father and those who receive Him are given power to become sons of God. What the first Adam lost will be restored by the second Adam, Jesus Christ, with the dominion first consigned to Adam given to Jesus at His second coming when He reigns in glory as king and deliverer over all the earth.
That restoration will bring universal peace and make the earth again very good, with the animal kingdom changed in nature and subdued, the groaning of creation ceasing in praise and thanksgiving, humanity's lost kingship restored and again recognized by the lower order, the fierce becoming gentle and the timid trustful. Man is the crowning work of all that God has made and a being to be prized, so the proper study of every learner is man, and true science in all its achievements is to be laid at the feet of the God of science.
