Psalms 8:7

All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

Sheep, oxen, and beasts of the field are placed under human feet as part of dominion over the works of God's hands. By that placing Adam was made the rightful ruler over animals and every living thing created, with the animals among the creatures under him. Humanity was set as God's representative over the lower orders of being, which cannot understand or acknowledge divine sovereignty yet were made capable of loving and serving people.

The animals were among the creatures over which Adam had dominion. That dominion over creation consigned to Adam was forfeited through sin. While he remained loyal nature acknowledged his rule, but after his sin rebellion spread through the animal creation.

Jesus will come in the clouds with His Father's glory and the holy angels, and the dominion once consigned to Adam and forfeited by him will be given to Jesus as King over all the earth. Then the animal kingdom will be changed and brought under His rule, the groanings of creation will cease, and universal peace with songs of praise will prevail. The verse also points to a future restoration in which people regain their lost kingship and animals again recognize their sway, with fierce animals becoming gentle and timid ones becoming trusting.
