Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
Delivering the poor and needy and ridding them out of the hand of the wicked is the charge laid on judges appointed to serve under God, whose work is to rescue the vulnerable from the power of the wicked and to defend and protect their rights and liberties as a duty of justice owed to every person. It is likewise the calling of Christians to manifest the compassion and sympathy of Christ toward others in their wants and woes, alleviating distress and suffering, watching over souls purchased with His blood, watching for opportunities to do them good, and with compassion making a difference to save souls and pull them out of danger. Physicians, lawyers, and merchants are called to share in the work of redemption by making God their standard and doing all their work for His glory.
Lawyers in particular are to be honest, doing no injustice to anyone but doing justice and judgment, obeying God's law in all their work, relieving the distress of the oppressed and lifting up the helpless, because God desires justice to be done in this world and no one is fit for heaven without obedience to His law. Merchants in particular are God's agents trading with His goods to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and befriend the poor. Coldness and indifference to suffering comes from losing first love, while God hears the cries of His suffering people rising to heaven, takes their case in hand, and will surely avenge them, bringing heavy judgments upon those who lack Christ's tenderness for His people.
