Psalms 82:5

They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.

The word God or gods in the psalm can be applied to mortal men, so there is nothing unreasonable in the Son being called by the Father's name. The verse describes people who do not know and will not understand, walking on in darkness, with the result that all the foundations of the earth are out of course. Sin is what has thrown all the foundations of the earth out of their proper order.

The disordered foundations picture the destruction of God's moral order amid conflict between employers and workers. The phrase about all the foundations being out of course describes financial confusion and distress, when credit and confidence are gone and thousands in the cities are unemployed and in pressing need. The foundations being out of course pictures great earthquakes as signs that the old earth is becoming infirm and its foundations are giving way toward destruction.

The verse applies to a day of trouble amid wickedness and failing faithfulness, yet even when the foundations are disordered the righteous can turn to the Lord, who tests them and remains their help and refuge. The disorder on earth does not move the foundation of God's moral government, which is love set forth in the Ten Commandments in the two duties of love to the Maker and love to fellow creatures. That foundation can never be abolished or set aside, and it always remains man's duty to love God with all the heart and the neighbor as self. Those who govern without understanding walk in moral darkness and leave the foundations out of course, and the disorder of the present world will continue until government returns to Christ, whose kingly rule over the nations has not yet begun.
