I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
The title gods is given to those to whom the word of God came. The wording that gives them that title cannot be set aside. The verse was brought forward to meet a charge of blasphemy, on the ground that if Scripture itself applies that title to those who received God's word, it is not blasphemy for the one whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world to call himself the Son of God. The works of the one thus sanctified and sent bore further witness that the Father was in him and he was in the Father.
The verse identifies God's people as children of the Most High. That standing as children stands in contrast to choosing to remain servants of sin by persisting in transgression and forgetting God's mercy, as Israel did. Those who claim the standing of children are to uphold God's standard continually and serve Him wholeheartedly. To forsake His requirements brings His judgments, while to put away sin and exercise living faith brings heaven's richest blessings.
